The National Electricity Market Of Singapore (NEMS)

What does deregulation of the electricity market mean?

The Singapore government embarked on the deregulation of the electricity market in order to introduce competition and achieve a more efficient market. The deregulated market has so far benefited customers through more competitive electricity prices and electricity package choices.

Under the deregulated market, contestable customers are free to choose independent electricity retailers, such as Tuas Power Supply and the type of contract that will best meet their business needs.

How do I know if I am a contestable consumer?

You may contact SP Services at 1800-2222 333 to check if your electricity account is classified as contestable. Remember to have your current SP Services electricity account number ready.

If your account is not classified as contestable, you may wish to apply for contestability with SP Services Ltd if your average monthly electricity consumption exceeds 10,000 kWh. Your monthly electricity consumption can be found on your SP Services invoice.

How will the liberalisation of the electricity market affect my company?

Businesses in Singapore stand to benefit from the liberalised market. As a contestable customer, you now have a choice to purchase electricity through one of the following options:

  1. Sign an electricity contract with electricity retailers such as Tuas Power Supply Pte Ltd
  2. Purchase electricity directly from wholesale electricity market and manage your electricity price fluctuations risks in-house
  3. Purchase electricity directly from wholesale electricity market through SP Services Ltd at spot prices.

Will there be any disruption to my electricity supply as a result of changing my electricity retailer?

Your electricity supply will not be affected by the transfer as the transfer process only involves administrative procedures.

Do I need to provide security deposit?

Tuas Power Supply requires a security deposit equivalent to 2.5 times your average monthly bill amount. However, if your company chooses to make monthly payments via GIRO, the security deposit may be reduced to an equivalent of 2 months' average bill amount. However, this is subject to the approval of your application for Interbank GIRO.

Why is there a need to connect a telephone line to the interval meter?

In the National Electricity Market Of Singapore, your meter readings will no longer be recorded physically by SP Services on a monthly basis. Instead, it will be downloaded through the telephone line daily between 12am to 6am.

Without a telephone line, SP Services can send a meter reader to your premise to manually download your half-hourly electricity consumption data. However, this is chargeable at $80 per account per trip.
